Amelia Mary Earhart was an American aviation pioneer and author. Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She received the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for this accomplishment. Amelia Earhart Embarks on Solo Trans-Atlantic Flight. On May 20, 1932, Amelia Earhart took off from Newfoundland; she landed in Ireland nearly 15 hours later. She later went missing in 1937 en route to Howland Island over the Pacific Ocean from Lae.
