The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand sparked the beginning of World War 1. Ferdinand heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire was shot along with his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg by a Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip on the streets of Sarajevo. The killings sparked a chain of events that led to WWI.
