Description:
When the Civil War began, Lincoln framed preserving the Union rather than abolishing slavery. This way it would be more successful. The Proclamation declared that as of January 1 (1863), all slaves in the rebellious states would be free. It didn't end up freeing a single slave but it fueled the continuing battle for human freedom.
