News reaches Milan March 17, generating lots of excitement and hope. Young radical republicans do demonstration, during which civilians fight and gain upper hand over Austrians trying to keep order.
Milanese were united against Austrians but political differences became evident. Moderates went to Piedmontese king, Charles Albert, for help to fight a war to expel Austrians from Lombardy, then to crush Italian Democrats (who had a different revolutionary vision).
