12h 22min, jan 10, 1917 y - “Silent Sentinels” march at White House
Description:
The “Silent Sentinels” march was organized by Alice Paul to pressure President Woodrow Wilson to support women’s suffrage. Women protested six days a week until June 4, 1919 when the 19th amendment was finally passed. It was called the “Silent Sentinels” because the protesters did it in silence. Though it was silent, many women were still harassed, arrested, and unjustly treated by authorities. This is important because it was such a huge march and lasted for an extremely long time, leaving a large influence on the Nation. During the march many women were harassed and arrested including Alice Paul.
