jul 23, 1944 - The Liberation of Majdanek, July 23, 1944
Description:
Majdanek was the first major Nazi concentration camps to be liberated. Located near Lublin, Poland, the Majdanek camp was liberated by Soviet forces in 1944. The Soviet forces found fewer than 500 prisoners left in the camp as the SS had began evacuating prisoners and liquidating the camp prior to the arrival of the Allied forces. Surprised by the rapid Soviet advance, Nazi soldiers attempted to hide the evidence of mass murder by demolishing the camp and tearing down large crematoriums. But in their haste, the Nazis could not destroy the gas chambers used to systemically execute Jewish prisoners.
