jan 5, 1820 - Missouri Compromise
Description:
Due to lots of debate over the balance between slave states and free states, the Missouri Compromise allowed Missouri into the US as a slave state and Maine as a free state. The compromise also ruled that slavery would be illegal north of the 36th parallel, with the exception of Missouri. This compromise was later overruled by the Kansas-Nebraska Act, but it was what settled the fight between slave and free states for a few years by keeping the balance between the number of states on each side.
