Description:
Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas, started by English colonizers who sought to establish a colony in the New World. They arrived during a drought, and it was too late to plant crops, so within a few months about 80% of the settlers were dead. Jamestown was at the brink of failure when more settlers and supplies arrived in 1610, but the colony survived and tobacco later became the colony’s first profitable export.
