jun 6, 1944 - D-day/Normandy landings

Description:

While Germany was fighting the Soviets to the East, and the Allies to the South, they were stretched very thin. The Allies decided that it was the time to retake France and make a push from the North West into Germany. On June 6th, 1944 thousands of Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy in Northern France. During this invasion, the allies took a hefty amount of casualties, even though the Germans were expecting them elsewhere. 60% of the allied invasion force were killed in attempting to invade Normandy. Omaha beach was the bloodiest beach of them all. The Germans had set up their best defenses on Omaha beach, and allied soldiers were mowed down.
D-day is a significant event, because it lead to the liberation of France, and later created another front that could lead to Germany.
