Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States of America and was the author of the Declaration of Independence. Before becoming president he was vice president under John Adams and was elected for president 1801 and served two four year terms. During his term The US purchased the Louisiana Territory and Lewis and Clark explored uncharted territory in the West. Jefferson was a slaveholder but however he promoted individual rights and after his presidency he retired in Virgina and help found the University of Virginia.
