vs. C.S.S. Virginia
Description:
That technological jump caused a strange event in the battle of the U.S.S. Monitor vs. the C.S.S. Virginia. On March 9, 1862, they clashed at sea, bouncing cannonballs off each other because the defensive technology was so far superior to the offensive technology. Because of the strong defenses, there were no deaths. After this, wooden boats were gone, and both sides recognized that this war wasn't going to be a naval fight. The next major battle, Fort Donelson, was fought on land.
