may 12, 1607 - Jamestown founded
Description:
On May 14, 1607, about 100 settlers founded the first permanent English settlement in North America. Its first two years were rough, due mostly to diseases, famine, and conflict with local tribes. John Smith and the leader of local Algonquian tribes came to an understanding and opened the doors for trade in 1608, which kept the colony afloat. In 1610, a second group of settlers brought supplies and they began to thrive. Throughout the 1620s, Virginia was made into an official crown colony and Jamestown was made the capital.
