Tewksbury was the underdog going into this race. the world record was 2 seconds faster than his best ever time. He had just been runner-up at the World Championships. Known for not being a good started Tewksbury had to push through the second half of the race. He ended up winning a historic gold for Canada with a new record time of 53.98.
