dec 30, 1657 - Otto von Guericke performed an experiment in which 2 copper hemispheres were put together and all of the air was pumped out. The sphere containing vacuum could not be pulled apart, even by two horses. These hemispheres are referred to as the Magdeburg hemispheres.
