In Northern India, a number of small kingdoms occupied the Kathmandu Valley that sat in the shadow of the mighty Himalayan mountain range. These small kingdoms, however, were very poor and weak which eventually lead a man by the name of Prithvi Narayan Shah to see the need for a complete unification if these valley kingdoms were to survive.
Prithvi Narayan was the king of the Gorkha Kingdom and in the early 1740s he set out on a conquest to subjugate the neighboring nations. After a number of battles with the other Hindu kingdoms, as well as with some of their British allies, the Gorkhas finally proclaimed victory in September 1768. Prithvi Narayan unified all of the tribes together into a single nation, becoming the first ruler of the new Kingdom of Nepal.
