Canada is well known as a former colony of the British empire, but even after Canada achieved independence the union jack remained on the flag. When the idea of picking a new flag came up, it was viewed as not very important, people saying it didn't matter to the country. After hundreds of suggestions and just horrible flag designs Canadians landed on the iconic red and white maple leaf. The maple leaf has become a universal symbol for Canada as a country. The new flag really showed Canada finally pushing away from its British parents.
