Description:

Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner attacked fellow Senator Andrew Butler of South Carolina in a speech called "The Crime Against Kansas". Butler's nephew Preston Brooks beat Sumner with a cane so viciously that he was rendered unconscious and nearly blind. Both Brooks and Sumner became martyrs in their respective regions.
