Gondul and Vignar rode for Davon's Watch, where Rowena was last seen. After questioning the guards briefly, by the mercy of Stendarr, someone had found the feeble, barefooted woman unconscious behind a barn in Stonefalls, and had taken her in to care for her.
After receiving directions to the barn, the Brotherband raced to it. Rowena was found laying in a room, weak. Gudrune was also feeble.
A blinding light burst from Rowena's chest, and Gudrune's body ceased to breathe.
After many minutes of what seemed like failure, Rowena, ever so softly, took a breath.
Whether it was Hircine who accepted the offering given to him, or the Divines taking mercy on their children — Rowena's Soul had successfully returned to her.
Rowena explained that, while inside of Gudrune's mind, Gudrune had felt that she would not come back from the ritual, and that she made the sacrifice despite the fact. An extremely noble thing, Gondul agreed.
Gudrune soon awoke, forever changed.
Gondul and Vignar lifted the two women onto their horses and rode for Davon's Watch, where they would stay in Gondul's lodging until they were fully nurtured back to full health.
During the events of the Planemeld, when many were stripped of their Souls, it wasn't unheard of for one to wind up carrying the Soul of another.
For instance; the respective Souls of Gadris, a Dunmer, and Zur, a Khajiit — (both victims of Molag Bal) — wound up occupying the same body, (Zur's body,) in Coldharbour.
Their two Souls vied for control of the body, and the burden seemed to gradually exhaust it. The two Souls could be drawn from it, and a single one put back, (ultimately consigning the other Soul to death.)
However, it is heavily implied that, if Zur and Gadris had a second body on hand, they could have saved eachother without the need of sacrificing the other's Soul.
This is not unlike the transfer of Rowena's soul from the Black Soul Gem to Gudrune by way of bodily sacrifice to Hircine — Gudrune, who had lost her own Soul to Coldharbour — thus allowing her vacant body to absorb the Soul upon its contracting Lycanthropy, and later transferring the Soul from her body back to Rowena upon locating her unconscious body.
