In the face of their Headmaster's inaction, Gudrune and Vignar worked together in an attempt to find a way to recover Rowena's soul from the soul gem.
Eventually, concluding that it may be possible to have the Daedric Lord Hircine recover her soul in exchange for a human sacrifice, the two planned a Ritual to sacrifice Gudrune in a last-ditch effort to save their dear friend.
During these times, the two grew fond of each others company, and it did not take long for the both of them to fall prey to love.
This was despite the fact that Gudrune's two axes retained the souls of her husband and son.
