15h 54min, oct 31, 1517 y - Ninety Five Theses: The Beginning of the Reformation
Description:
The protestant reformation was a hugely important event: although it unleashed 150 years of bloodshed and war, it also transformed the mindset of Northern Europe. By creating the "protestant work ethic", and de-stigmatizing usury, it allowed for centuries of rapid economic growth. In 1517, northern Europe was a backwater compared to the rich and powerful kingdoms of Iberia and Italy. By 1700, Italy and Spain were little more than playgrounds for the five great powers, all northern European: Prussia, Austria, France, England, Russia.
