jan 1, 1870 - Whitman settled in Camden, New Jersey, where he had come to for a reason, which was to see and spend time with his dying mother at his brother's home although after suffering a stroke, Whitman found it impossible to go back to Washington, so, instead, he stayed with his brother until the 1882 publication of Leaves of Grass by James R. Osgood that gave him enough money to buy a house in Camden, New Jersey.
