jan 2, 1000 - Oneota/Ioway adopt bow and arrow

Description:

Bow and arrow introduced to Oneota (Ioway ancestors) and other Native American groups around 1000 c.e.:

The bow and arrow were introduced to the Oneota (Ioway ancestors) around the turn of the first millennium c.e. According to Ioway oral history, it was brought to them by a foreign group who joined the Hungeh (Oneota) and went on to become the Wolf clan of the Ioway. They hunted ta—or deer—and other common game in the area around their villages, whose skins they sewed into clothing. Just as the Sauk and Meskwaki would do later, Oneota and Ioway communities went into the vast tall-grass prairies of western Iowa on annual hunting trips. They were able to travel huge distances; one Ioway trail stretched hundreds of miles to connect the Mississippi and the Missouri. They spent 2 to 3 months living in skin-covered teepees while hunting che—or buffalo—whose meat they would dry and store to be used in the other months of the year. In later years the Ioway did annual beaver hunts during the winter so they could sell the furs to French Traders.
