June 3, 1861: The Battle of Philippi is known as the "first land battle of the Civil War." The battle itself was very minor and lasted less than 20 minutes. The reason this battle was important is because it was the first inland clash between a large number of soldiers. Another reason it was important is because it helped George B. McClellan become commander of the largest Union army, the Army of the Potomac.
