Description:

April 12, 1861: Fort Sumter was a Union Army fort in South Carolina. The commander, Major Robert Anderson, refused to surrender to the Confederates. On April 12, 1861, Confederate artillery opened fire on the fort, forcing its surrender. Although it wasn't necessarily a battle, the attack on Fort Sumter is said to have "marked" the beginning of the Civil War.
