apr 30, 1803 - Louisiana Purchase
Description:
In 1803, Napoleon Bonaparte, a French military leader, offered Thomas Jefferson some land for 3 cents per acre for what is now known as the Louisiana Purchase. This offer included only some of the territory that France owned. Jefferson then sent Monroe and Livingston to explore this land, which added 600 million acres to the territory, of which the territory included most of the 13 states between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. Jefferson accepted this offer, and the United States quickly expanded.
