Description:
Christopher Columbus, born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451, worked as a seaman and then a sailing entrepreneur in his early life. On August 3rd, 1492, Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain with 3 ships, the Santa María, Pinta, and Niña. On October 12th, he sighted land, and went ashore that same day and claimed it for Spain. In May of 1498, with 6 ships, he left in hopes of finding Hispaniola, but instead making landfall in Trinidad. He entered the Gulf of Paria in Venezuela and planted the Spanish flag in South America on August 1st, 1498.
