jan 1, 2017 - Mark Dupree

Description:

Mark A. Dupree, Sr., is the District Attorney of Wyandotte County, Kansas. He was sworn into office on January 9th, 2017, and then re-elected for a second four-year term in 2020.

Dupree is the son of Alvin and Linda Dupree. His parents set their family standard by personifying dedicated and attentive leadership. Their example helped Dupree understand the importance of giving back to the community at an early age. They loved their family, church, and the community. They shared with their children a deep passion for serving, advocating, and inspiring others.

When Dupree was young, he had the opportunity to meet an attorney named Cordell Meeks, Jr. The encounter of meeting an African-American male lawyer inspired Dupree to study law. As envisioned, Dupree later received a University of Kansas - Bachelor's Degree in Political Science with a minor in Leadership Studies and a Washburn University School of Law - Juris Doctorate Degree.

Along with fulfilling the role of District Attorney, he is also the Senior Pastor and ordained Elder at his father's church Grace Tabernacle Family Life Outreach Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Dupree married his law school sweetheart, Attorney Shanelle Dupree. They have four beautiful children.

Dupree's professional background includes working as a clerk in Jackson County, Missouri. He served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Jackson County. He also served as an Assistant Public Defender in the Johnson County Public Defender's Office. He and his wife practiced in their firm, Dupree and Dupree, LLC – Attorneys at Law, until his swearing into office in 2017.

In 2017, a case involving a young man named Lamonte McIntyre, who was wrongfully convicted and spent 23 years in prison, enlightened Dupree that more investigations needed to be pursued regarding unjust prosecutions. The evidence from McIntyre's case proved he was completely innocent and that local law enforcement covertly exercised foul play. Once McIntyre was exonerated, Dupree knew he needed to continue to help others falsely accused and victimized by the system.

Consequently, McIntyre's case inspired Dupree to create the Community Integrity Unit, the first-ever in the state of Kansas. Dupree once stated, "The division works to prevent, identify, and remedy false convictions."

Dupree is a Governor on the Kansas Bar Association Board of Governors, served on the Kansas Legal Services Board of Directors, served as Committee Chairperson for the Wyandotte County Bar Association, is an Executive Board Member on the Earl E. O'Connor American Inn of Courts, former board member of Young Women on the Move, former board member of the Johnson County Bar Association, and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and is currently serving as an active Sunflower House board member.
