Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Guiou H. Taylor started playing the violin when he was a young boy. He arrived at Western University in 1918. Early on, recognized as a violin musical genius, Taylor became a prominent figure at Western University. He also attended the former Horner Institute of Music (now named the UMKC Conservatory) in Kansas City, Missouri, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Taylor became a popular violinist playing with various musical groups while staying connected to the university. While there, he worked as a carpenter and a violin teacher, later becoming the director of the school of music. He remained at Western until the school closed in 1943. Taylor is known as one of the longest-serving staff members at the university.
