Priscilla Irene Mills-Bowman was born in 1928 and raised in the Quindaro area. She was the daughter of a Pentecostal minister. At the age of seven, Priscilla would sing for inmates at the state penitentiary in Lansing, Kansas. She performed in area nightclubs as a teen. In the 1950s, she joined the Jay McShann band. The band signed a recording deal with Vee-Jay records. In 1955, Hands Off became a hit, holding the #1 position on the R&B music charts for sixteen weeks and staying on the charts for months. She recorded other songs like Tortured, Everything’s alright, and A Rocking Good Way. Priscilla died on July 24, 1988, at the age of 60, and was subsequently honored with a Kansas City Jazz Heritage Award (1988) and an Elder Statesmen of Kansas City Jazz Award (2003). She is one of the greatest Kansas City blues singers of all time.
