jan 1, 1521 - Martin Luther Excommunicated and Outlawed
Description:
In 1521, emperor Charles V. thought he could change Luther's ideas on Catholicism and the church, however, Luther refused to show when summoned to appear before the imperial diet. After this, the emperor made Luther an outlaw within the empire, and burned all of his works. Martin Luther was to be captured and killed, but his ruler, Frederick, the elector of Saxony, sent him into hiding. This was important because it showed how dedicated Luther was to spreading his message and religion.
