fights Muslim Arabs in Spain. After Charlemagne converts his subjects to
Christianity in 800, the Pope crowns him the Holy Roman Emperor.
Pope Leo III crowns Charlemagne head of the Holy Roman Empire at Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
This coronation marks the beginning of a new relationship between church and state, with the emperor’s temporal authority depending upon the spiritual blessing of the Pope.
