Maryland Jefferson "M.J." Donald was born on March 20, 1934. Donald grew up in Juniper Gardens, located north of Jersey Creek. The same area where many Exodusters arrived in Kansas many years before. He graduated from Sumner High School's Class of 1952. After graduation, his first job was as a local disc jockey at a radio station in Kansas City, Missouri, going by the name "Dream King."

In 1953, Donald decided to join the United States Air Force. He entered the Federal Government service working in the Midwest Telecommunications Center, located in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Ultimately, retiring seven years later as a Master Sergeant. After the service, he established his own ambulance company in San Antonio, Texas.

Soon, Donald received a request to accept an appointment with the United States Government as a Civil Service Staff member. He served as a senior Test Director and Quality Assurance Specialist in the Test and Evaluation Directorate, United States Army Information Systems Engineering Support Activity. He developed, implemented, and managed test to ensure quality assurance programs for large and complex defense communication projects.

Donald's exceptional knowledge and technical ability made him one of the most sought-after persons for consulting and problem-solving. He received several Distinguished Service Awards from the Federal Government, including the Distinguished Service Award for an exceptional African American. He also received Appreciation of Service awards during his tenure. Maryland J. Donald served his country for more than 36 years.

In 1989, he was awarded a Buffalo Soldier Replica in honor of his many years of government service, acknowledging his character, expertise, and dedication to the United States of America.
