In 1927 Logan Clendening, M.D. publishes The Human Body, the first popular medical book written for the lay public selling more than 500,000 copies. By 1940 Clendening became the first chair of the Department of History of Medicine. The Clendening History of Medicine Library currently holds 40,000 volumes and is one of the finest collections of rare medically related books and manuscripts. It contains World War I and II medical journals, photos, movies, medical records, and private physician records from the early 20th century. It also has a historical collection of medical instruments and a Civil War Collection (Hulston, Nancy “Clendenin Medical Library” The Historical Journal of Wyandotte County, VIII. P. 392.)
