jan 1, 1887 - Cruise-Scroggs Mansion

Description:

The Cruise Scroggs Mansion was built in 1887. James Cruise was the first Register of Deeds in
Wyandotte County. After his death in 1873, his widow, Margaret, married John Scroggs in 1875.
Margaret had a son and two daughters with Cruise and one son with Scroggs. She was of German descent born in Ohio. Scroggs was a lawyer from Ohio who served two terms as district attorney in Wyandotte County. Scroggs had their mansion built on 720 North 4th Street on the same site as the Cruise home. The 1887 mansion is named Cruise-Scroggs Mansion because the design and construction
incorporated the earlier home. The architect for the Cruise-Scroggs Mansion was John Braechlein who had a long architectural career in Wyandotte County. The house is in Queen Anne style brick and serves today as the Strawberry Hill Museum.
