jul 1, 1940 - Meatpacking in Decline

Description:

1940s: The meatpacking industry was in decline, and children of immigrant families on Strawberry Hill chose other kinds of work. Education gained and greater opportunities available offered material well-being that wan unknown in the previous generation. This was the dream coming true. The returning servicemen had delayed starting families and completing educations. The rapidly forming second generation could not all find places to live on the Hill, and they moved to the western part of the county during this period. In many cases, occupying lots that were once part Slavic-owned farms. The community was now divided between widely separated parts of the city. Contact was not as easy, and the suburban lifestyle was not as consistent with traditional values. Source: Strawberry Hill: A Neighborhood Study, Susan Greenbaum 1978
