jan 1, 1800 - Strawberry Hill

Description:

800s The neighborhood known as Strawberry Hill occupies a slope of the river bluff, in the extreme east-central portion of the city. The name derives from wild strawberries that once grew on the sides of the hill (per the Wyandot Nation of Kansas - when the Wyandot Native Americans were brought to the West bottoms from Canada as part of the Indian Removal Act, many of them died. Upon reaching the city, the Wyandots believed they must bury their ancestors on high-hills, so they chose present-day Strawberry Hill (among other locations) to bury it. It is their belief that wild-strawberries grow on top of their graves, hence the name Strawberry Hill) . The boundaries of the hill extend 16 blocks south to Central Avenue. Seventh Street, a major traffic artery, runs along the western edge of the area. To the east is I-70, and just beyond that Source: Strawberry Hill: A Neighborhood Study, Susan Greenbaum 1978
