Description:

Located on the Missouri River and present day 78th Street, Pomeroy was originally called Unionville when it was first plotted in 1870. Pomeroy was an important station on the Missouri Pacific Railroad, the next station southeast from Connor City (Wolcott). Although it was never a large town, it was site to a busy milling and shipping activities. According to Morgan, Pomeroy was an “important shipping point for dairymen who supply large quantities of milk for the city.” The town had a grocery and dry goods store operated by Derrick Stone, W. Weston’s Blacksmith and wagon shop, Overton and Betton’s Native Lumber company, Beach and Company dry goods and groceries, and a dealership of boots and shoes owned by E.O. Brown. Overton also owned a saw mill, which he later turned into a flour mill, named Maple Cliff Mills.
