jan 1, 1857 - Quindaro Brewery Business

Description:

The Quindaro Brewery opened in 1857, owned by Jacob Zehntner and Henry Steiner. Temperance advocates of the Vigilance Committee were against saloons in Quindaro and caused two to shut down. Hard liquor was prohibited, but beer drinking accepted. By 1858, Zehntner and Steiner decided to dissolve their partnership. The property changed ownership a few times with the county taking possession. The county placed the land up for auction suggesting the amount of $42.00 for back taxes in 1862. The New England Emigrant Society paid the amount, then transferred the property deed and the rest of their interest in Quindaro to Isaac Adams & Henry Ayling of Boston.
