jan 1, 1867 - Pleasant Green Baptist Church

Description:

Pleasant Green Baptist is one of the oldest African American churches in the Northeast area. In 1867, the church began with members meeting in a small building, previously an ice house that was located in the West Bottoms. The Exodus adding many new members to the congregation made necessary the need for another facility. A larger frame church was built at the corner of 1st and Splitlog.

In 1892, Rev. George McNeal arrived in Wyandotte, assigned to lead the congregation as the new pastor. He arrived via the Fannie Lewis steamship, which transported many migrants to the area during that time. In 1918, Rev. McNeal persuaded Fowler Packing Company to donate building materials for a new church at 4th and Oakland Avenue.
