1958: The first Student Union was developed under the auspices of J. Paul Jewell. The Student Governing Body (Student Senate) had a strong budget to bring in speakers in conjunction with the International Relations Council. Famed speakers included: comedian Dick Gregory; Tran Van Dih, a Vietnamese diplomat; Karl Hess, of the new left wing; Dr. Charles Hurst, President of Malcolm X College; Pierre Salinger, press secretary; Julian Bond, Georgia legislator; Dr. Salomon Flores, Chicano Movement lecturer, and many others.
