Description:

Sandra Villalobos-Del Rio: 2002 Reasons to Believe Honoree: Sandra Villalobos-Del Rio struggled with English when she entered kindergarten, but with the help of her teachers quickly became fluent. But by the time she graduated from J.C. Harmon High School in 1994, she had set her sights on being a teacher. Today, she teaches at John Fiske Elementary, recently received her English as a Second Language (ESL) certification, and helps students overcome the same language barriers she struggled with as a child.

At John Fiske Elementary, she is perhaps best known for her innovative teaching style and her ability to keep students focused and involved. Outside the classroom, Sandra is a member of the Social and Community Involvement Committees at Fiske and is an active member of the St. Joseph/St. Benedict Parish.
Growing up, Sandra’s siblings gave her reasons to believe in the future. As the oldest of four children, she felt it was her mission to set a good example for her younger brother and sisters. She wanted to show them that they could succeed. To that end, Sandra repeatedly made the principal’s All-A’s Honor Roll, was a member of the National Honor Society, LULAC Club, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and was named “Student of the Year” in 1993-94 at J.C. Harmon.
Sandra currently lives in Kansas City, Kan., with her husband, Juan, and their son, Nathan. She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1998 and will receive a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in ESL in December 2002, both from the University of Kansas.
