jan 1, 1876 - Holy Name Parish

Description:

Holy Name Parish established in City of Rosedale in 1876: Holy Name Parish was established in the City of Rosedale on privately-owned land between Turkey Creek and the Frisco Railroad in 1874. In 1876, a wood-frame church dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus was built and operated as a mission of St. Joseph Parish in Shawnee, Kansas. Four years later, the Archdiocese established a parochial school, which would eventually be housed in a stately building on the existing site in 1901. Construction of the limestone, Romanesque church began when the cornerstone was laid in 1909. The finished church was dedicated on June 2, 1912. From an original congregation of German, Irish Belgian and Hungarian workers in the nearby rail yards and rolling mill, Holy Name would see an influx of Mexican parishioners by the time the new sanctuary was consecrated. Today, the congregation is predominantly Latinos of Mexican origin. . Source: https://khri.kansasgis.org/
