1957 Crusader Life Insurance Company founded by James H. Browne, opened its doors. It was the first African American Life Insurance Company that offered only Ordinary Life Insurance policies.

The first Board of Directors: James H. Browne; William H. Young; Isadore Gross; Robert P. Lyons; Dr. Leland Holbert; George W. Haley; James E. Alsbrook; Dr. V.L. Dixon; Coy D. Gill; Harold Robbins; Wendell Robbins; J.D. Williams. (New Arrival-Crusader Life Insurance Company). In 1969, Crusader Life Insurance Company would merge with American Woodmen’s Life Insurance Company, headquartered in Denver, Colorado. In 1979, the first woman, the late Lillie Anne Yates Owens, would become President and Chief Executive Officer of American Woodmen’s Life Insurance Company.

In 1961, the United States Chamber of Commerce sent Browne to represent the United States government at the international Labor Conference in Geneva Switzerland. (Success Unlimited, September 1979)
