Description:

Douglass State Bank opened in 1947, becoming the first African American owned bank west of the Mississippi River. H.W. Sewing founded the bank starting with six employees. The bank was located at 1314 N. 5th St, Kansas City, Kansas. Sewing was well known for his leadership skills and commitment to the community. Six of his employees became presidents of other minority banks across the country. Over the years, Sewing received many awards for his work in the banking industry, helping countless people.
