Description:

In 1916, Elder D.J. Young, a run-away slave, born in Chester, South Carolina, about 1852, and who escaped from the plantation before the beginning of the Civil War. When he was young, his parents sent him to a country school where he finished the prescribed courses. After completing his education there, he attended Benedict College in South Carolina as well as Brainard College, from which he graduated. He distinguished himself by graduating from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.
He became associated with the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and began publishing the AME Zion periodical, The Star of Zion.
He was one of the “Founding Fathers” of The Church of God in Christ. He became the First Overseer (Bishop, Prelate) to the Churches of God In Christ in the states of Arkansas, Texas and Kansas. He founded the Young Memorial Temple Church of God in Christ on September 23, 1916, near 4th Street and Oakland Avenue. A new church was built in the 1970’s and is located at 9th and Waverly Avenue.
