Description:

Established in 1924, Boy Scout Troop 11 of the Wyandotte Council Boy Scouts of America, was located at First A.M.E. Church. The scout program and Troop 11 became recognized as one of the most outstanding programs offered at the church.
In 1930, the Council Representative was Dr. Sherman D. Scruggs, supervisor of Negro elementary schools and later president of Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Missouri, and a member of the first Board of Directors of Douglass State Bank. The Scout Master was S. H. Thompson, Jr., a teacher at Northeast Jr. High School, who later became principal of Sumner High School. Many other members became nationally and internationally known, such as John McLendon, Arthur McLendon, John E. Hodge, and Lloyd Mobiley. There were approximately 15 members in all.
Several members of Troop 11 attained the rank of Eagle Scout: Frank Newman, Orilton Shumate, Hargest Shumate, Charles Spears, Arthur Spears, Robert Brady, Wendell Robbins, Jr., James Wakefield, Richard Lewis, Vernon Nichols, Jr., Francis Harrison, and Dan Matthews
Three men received the Silver Beaver Award: S.H. Thompson, Jr., Joy Valley, and Monroe Cox. Later, other Scout Masters were: James Caldwell, Hargest Shumate, Dobson Brady, Chester Owens, Sr., Uriel Owens, Jackson Van Treece, and Albert McGee.
