The Alliance War, also known as the Three Banners War, is a war that has splintered Tamriel into three factions — all vying for the Ruby Throne and waging battles all across Cyrodiil.
When the alliances saw that the Empire was rapidly losing soldiers due to internal rivalry and desertion — steadily weakening overtime in Emperor Varen Aquilarios' absence — they took advantage of its weakness in an attempt to expand their territory. Clivia Tharn and her Loyalist forces proceeded to lose the entirety of Tamriel's provinces as they fractured into three opposing factions, as well as swaths of Imperial Legionaires that once again donned the title of 'Separatists.'
Thus, the war began.
It is not entirely clear who struck first, though it can be assumed that the Dominion likely made the first threatening power-play towards an attempt to lay claim to the Ruby Throne, as the war began very shortly after its conception.
At this point in time, realizing they no longer had a leader to fight under — and fighting to defend the Imperial City by themselves — the Separatist Imperials knew they must reassemble and work inconspicuously within the shadows of war in order to have any chance of survival. This had to be a fragile operation, of course — but it had to be done to secure any sort of footing in the future.
Both 'Loyalist' Imperials and Separatist Imperials alike often refer to the Factions as 'Provincial Militia,' though not always.
