52% overnight visitors, 26% day visitors, 17% cruise ship, 5% Akaroa residents

Two-thirds of respondents identified themselves as international visitors (64%; n=67), with the
remaining respondents being New Zealand residents (36%; n=38) (see Figure 8). Most respondents were travelling with friends and family (81%; n=85), with the remaining either travelling alone (11%; n=12) or with an organised group (8%; n=7).


Of the 106 Akaroa visitors who completed the
questionnaire, a total of 76 per cent (n=81) had already completed a marine tourism activity, with the remaining 24 per cent (n=25) intending to, but yet to complete, a marine-based tourism activity that day. Most visitors participated in harbour nature cruises (60%), kayaking (29%) and sailing cruises (16%)
