King Ranser's War was a brutal civil war that took place in High Rock in the year 2E 566. In the year 2E 563, after the beginning of the second Wayrest dynasty, the young King Emeric began a search for his bride. His first choice was Rayelle, daughter of King Ranser of Shornhelm, but before the marriage contracts were wrought, Emeric instead married Maraya, the Redguard princess of Sentinel.

This stunned courtiers across the land, and prompted bards to sing songs of Maraya's bewitching beauty. However, strategists saw the move as strengthening the trade between High Rock and Hammerfell. After Emeric's Wedding in 566, High Rock readied itself for a golden age of commerce. Three moons later, it was bracing for a bloody civil war.

Caught between the Breton hammer and the Orcish anvil, the majority of Ranser's troops were utterly annihilated in the Battle of Markwasten Moor. Ranser hadn't counted on Emeric's canniness; the King of Wayrest had sent emissaries into the Wrothgar Mountains with a pledge to return Orsinium to the Orcs if they attacked their hated enemy in Shornhelm. Rivenspire was despoiled, and some Orcs remembered how the Bretons of Shornhelm had led the assault that toppled Orsinium some 135 years before. These debts were paid to Shornhelm in full. Ranser's War built the Daggerfall Covenant as it is today: Stormhaven, Rivenspire, and Wrothgar are all indelibly marked by these events.

The main reason the Daggerfall Covenant was established in 2E 563 was to end the poverty and suffering throughout the kingdoms of High Rock and Hammerfell caused by dwindling trade routes, which in turn was caused by the many wars happening throughout the land such as King Ranser's War. This could not be done as long as an enemy sat on the Ruby Throne.

The Merchant King of Wayrest, Emeric, took action and united the previously warring races of Breton, Redguard and Orc. He earned the trust of the kings of High Rock, earned alliance of the Redguards by a diplomatic marriage with Maraya of Sentinel, and finally, made a war treaty with the Orcs.

The Daggerfall Covenant stretches over the provinces of High Rock, Hammerfell, the city-state of Orsinium and the Colovian Highlands in Cyrodiil. Its capital is the city of Wayrest, built on two shores of the Bjoulsae River in High Rock. The faction is led by the High King Emeric.
