mar 1, 1938 - Akaroa Tweed Factory opens

Description:

In 1938, the Akaroa
Tweed factory opened on the corner of Church and Jolie Streets, opposite the school, in
utilitarian buildings that had probably been first erected in the early years of the 20th
century for an aerated water bottling factory. The tweed was woven from local wool and
found markets throughout New Zealand, as made-up garments or sold by the yard. The
factory, which employed between 10 and 14 hands, closed in 1949.
